Gorgeous print patterns, strong colours and distinctive geometric lines form the basis of Jaana Parkkila’s impressive summer collection. Two of the collection’s patterns were designed by Fujiwo Ishimoto in the 1970s: Sumo, composed of broad and forceful brushstrokes, and the exuberant Kuuma. The new Moto print is the work of Marjaana Virta.
The oversize flowers of the Kuuma pattern glow in shades of orange and yellow and fuchsia; a second colouring is a dramatic combination of black and grey and white. The billowing sleeves and the generous skirts, which can be adjusted, emphasise the femininity of the garments.

Marimekko - Concept Store in Vancouver
When it comes to firsts in fashion, Vancouver is often left behind by the more designer-savvy Montreal or metropolitan Toronto. Well, we’ll trail no more. This time the west coast can yell out a big “hell yeah!,” because we’re home to the first Marimekko concept store in Canada.
Marimekko is no newcomer to the retail scene. Armi and Viljo Ratia founded the corporation in the 50’s, and there are stores throughout Europe, Asia and the US. The company is now traded on the Helsinki Stock Exchange, but the shops are run by independent retailers. From the look of their clothing, décor, and accessories, you should probably buy some shares.
The store has completely brightened the 1200 block of Hamilton Street. The focus is on clothing, interior decorations, toys, and bags created by many different designers, but with an obvious central theme. All are cheery and bright, which is exactly what we need to get through this dreary winter season.
The Finnish concept store carries everything from original fabrics, clothing, interior design solutions, and even bags, all styled in the store's recognizable bold graphics and colours. The Finnish staple has been around since 1951, so they must be doing something right. Their top selling items are those that are geared towards babies, so next time you're off to a baby shower, avoid Baby Gap and try something new.
I strolled in and thought I’d pick up a little something for myself. The Gaudete jacket ($413) would be just thing to bring flair to my evenings out. Black with bright colours, it would be perfect for the holiday season. I also coveted a poppy and white pink purse made from their signature poppy fabric designed in the fifties (Unikko for $70.50).
There’s plenty for men and children too. The men’s Jokapoika stripped shirts come in various fits ($109) and the kids Boboo backpack is great for carting around all those toys.
Home decorators will be delighted to find everything from furnishings to fabric. Trays for those mornings you have time for breakfast in bed, towels, bed linens and kitchenware kick the drab right out of your home. This could just be the place for one-stop holiday shopping.
Too bad, Toronto and Montreal- this time Vancouver’s first. And just wait until you see us after the 2010 Olympics. How will you compete with us then? -C.A.
